My fabulous stay at La Sultana

Ever dreamed of staying at a authentic riad, but with the comfort and services of a 5* hotel? I have! Read about it in my experience at La Sultana Marrakech in my new blogpost.

Hotel La Sultana is a a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property and located in the historical m’dina of Marrakech. With a distance of only 10 minutes walk from the famous Jemaa el Fna square, it is the perfect spot to escape the hussle and bussle of the souks and enjoy their outdoors heated swimming pool, panoramic terraces, spa or the library.

At arrival we were friendly welcomed and guided to their beautiful terrace with a view over the market, the famous Saadian Tombs, the Kasbah’s great mosque, Koutoubia and if you’re lucky (we were!) the Atlas Mountains with snow on top! We had a drink – sweet Atay of course and went to our suite. La Sultana is made up of five adjoining Riads – all with their own style and identity. All different, but one thing in common: they all share an outstanding Moroccan craftsmanship.

We stayed at Riad Saadia: a flavour of majestic Fez, with plenty of cedar wood panelling, detailed ceilings and of course A LOT of Zelij! A characteristic of all Riads was the gorgeous open courtyard in the center of the suites. Our suite featured a small salon with a fireplace, a bathroom with stone bath, lots of marble, a separate shower room, a W.C. and of course the master bedroom which opened out onto a large shaded, zelij’ed courtyard with a fountain in the middle. The suite had a small minibar with complimentary soft drinks and waters. Since this is a genuine 5* establishment, there’s 24 hour room service too!

I have an eye for detail and love it when a hotel has an attention to detail as well. Everything in the hotel was thoughtfully presented. It was an amazing experience and a real pleasure to explore the rest of the hotel. In the morning we had breakfast by the pool. Breakfast is amazing. You can choose to compose your breakfast at their buffet or pick a traditional Moroccan dish. I choose my favorite ‘Khli3’ – dried meat with scrambled eggs!

From the moment I entered the hotel and had fresh mint tea on the rooftop, I was happy to be there. After a busy trip, going back and forth from one riad to another, my stay at La Sultana was a very much needed one in which I found rest and relaxation. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy a luxurious hotel and at the same time wants to experience a real Moroccan stay!
